My first day of Professional Development as a new PYN intern made me feel nervous at first, which is something many of us experience when starting something new. As soon as I walked into Curtis Hall, the staff were so kind and welcoming which allowed me to feel comfortable.Â
Throughout the day, I learned many valuable skills, including the importance of networking, how to write a professional email, understanding generational differences, and exploring different career paths.
Although I already had an idea of what I want to do in the future, I was taught that there is nothing wrong with listening to other perspectives and learning about careers I had not previously considered.
I really enjoyed talking with my Career Coach Kayah - we had a really good conversation about nursing and about the options that were available to me if I still want to follow that career path after high school. She gave me helpful advice about reaching the goals I have set for myself and showed me how to create new opportunities for my future.
I have learned that becoming successful comes from staying open to learning and taking advantage of every opportunity that comes your way. PYN staff also encourage everyone to challenge themselves while creating a supportive and comfortable environment. Learning on PD Day was engaging, enjoyable and creative.Â
Even something we consider simple, like writing with pen and paper reminded me of how valuable traditional skills can still be. After just one day, I have already learned the importance of understanding different perspectives, building connections, and giving and receiving constructive feedback.Â
I am excited to continue growing throughout this internship, and I know the support from the PYN community will help me achieve my goals.
