Thousands of Philadelphia’s youth begin summer jobs today provided by PYN on behalf of WorkReady

PHILADELPHIA, PA (July 2, 2018) — Today marks the beginning of summer jobs across our city provided by the Philadelphia Youth Network (PYN) on behalf of WorkReady, a citywide effort to address the skills gap. Thanks to strong public and private support, this summer, nearly 10,000 young Philadelphians are projected to participate in a high quality paid work experience provided by PYN and other WorkReady partners.

“Young people are our future workforce and we need to ensure that they are prepared to fill the jobs that our Philadelphia employers have,” said Mayor Jim Kenney. “By making youth employment a priority, we are making the success of our future economy a priority.” 

While PYN has programs that run year-round, summer is a critical entry point for youth employment and for many young people, it’s their first job. Partnerships with youth-serving organizations and businesses across Philadelphia help create unique 120-hour experiences for participants, ages 12-21, that develop necessary skills as identified in the Career Development Framework, such as teamwork and collaboration, critical thinking, communication and creativity and innovation along their journey to being prepared for a career. PYN’s summer jobs program provides participants a continuum of unique experiences that guides participants along their journey, including:

  • Career exposure to guide middle school students to explore skills and experiences while beginning to build their professional network
  • Service learning to help address real-world issues, problems and needs in local to global communities
  • Work experience to explore a desired career path
  • Internships for participants to have exposure to careers otherwise not accessible to the teenage population

These opportunities are included in the Mayor’s goal to have 16,000 young people participating in a quality work experience annually by 2020. The city’s workforce strategy, Fueling Philadelphia’s Talent Engine, calls for partners throughout the city to increase the number of quality work experiences for students in order to help ensure that they graduate college and career ready.
