Horizon House will provide services for Out-of-School Youth (OSY)
who have been labeled with serious emotional disturbance (SED), or
have one or more mental health diagnoses and /or learning
disabilities. They will target OSY with a GED or high school diploma
but are basic skills deficient and want to advance to a
post-secondary degree program. The goal of the program is to
increase the level of academic skills in the areas of reading and
writing, math and algebra and science and competency in life skills
of participants leading to successful completion of college entrance
exams and/or SAT exams and enrollment in a degree program.
To this aim, the program will offer college bound classes on topics
including study skills, time management, life skills, and research
skills; assistance in completing college entrance applications and
financial aid counseling; individualized academic tutoring and SAT
preparation, career counseling; a mentoring program; and supportive
services including linkages to mental and physical health services
and drug and alcohol services both within Horizon House and other
agencies; housing and financial assistance, benefits counseling, and
disability management.
