Philadelphia youth WANT to work...
Here's how you can help!

Each year, WorkReady programs provide thousands of young people with career exposure and preparation opportunities designed to enhance their understanding and mastery of skills needed to be successful in a 21st century, global economy. WorkReady is an easy, convenient way to develop our region's future workforce by supporting today's youth. This cross-sector partnership is endorsed by the business community and city leadership. AND it's a great way to employ young people who want to work.

Career Exposure

Career exposure activities connect area businesses, organizations and individual volunteers to Philadelphia high school students with the purpose of providing first-hand exposure to the working world and an understanding of how school is connected to career success.
    Career Exposure pathways:
  • Guest Speaker Series: An opportunity for volunteers to share their career stories and experiences with students to inspire high school students to intentionally explore their own interests and set career-related goals
  • Worksite Tour: An opportunity for area businesses and organizations to welcome high school students for a one-day career exploration experience. Worksite Tours may be aligned with a specific industry that corresponds with a School District of Philadelphia program of study or a general workplace experience
  • Career Days: An opportunity for volunteers to partner with schools to offer insight into the working world. Career Day activities include mock interviews, career fairs, speaker panels, and workshops
Visit the Career Exposure Portal for opportunities to engage youth.

Industry Pipeline

Employers can have a significant impact in shaping the future workforce of our region when they participate in an Industry Pipeline program, a two-year comprehensive, industry-specific training for 11th and 12th grade students. The program is designed to prepare participants, upon high school graduation, to build successful careers at local companies in high-growth, high-demand industries, as well as to pursue post-secondary education. The Industry Pipeline model relies on partnerships among employers, high schools, youth-serving organizations, and institutions of higher education.

For more information on how you can begin an Industry Pipeline program in your workplace, contact Festo Okidi at (267) 502-3724, or send an email, or take a look at the Industry Pipeline How-To Guide.

Summer Internships

WorkReady Summer Internships provide Philadelphia high school students with paid workplace experiences at area businesses for six weeks during the summer. Interns participate in a weekly series of professional development workshops which focus on career exploration, work-readiness, and college-preparation. In 2011, more than 124 businesses hired 1,049 summer interns through WorkReady Philadelphia. This investment, combined with foundation and government funding, contributed to over 5,300 young people getting a taste of the professional world. This year's Summer Internship program takes place July 2 through August 10.

All internships are focused on career exposure, connections to a caring adult, and skill development. School-year internships give the opportunity for long-term experience and growth for both the workplace and intern.
